This week we will study cases relating to freedom of speech and expression on the part of school students.  It will be the foundation of next week's simulation activity.  Conference if you have questions!


Monday, September 15, 2014 (45 min)

Topic:  Discussion of the reading. Intro to Hazelwood.

Homework: Read Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier . The reading is as follows:

EVERYONE
should read the syllabus.
LAST NAMES A-G
will read the dissent.
LAST NAMES L-U
will read the majority opinion.

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 (50 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.
Homework: Read Morse v. Frederick.  The reading is as follows:

EVERYONE should read the syllabus.

Marcus, James and Bella will read the majority opinion and Isabella, Louise and Dominique will read the concurrence by Justice Thomas and Regan, Joe and Connor will read the concurrence by Justice Alito.
Mackenzie, Larissa, Natalie and Jacqui will read the dissent by Justice Stevens, and Megan, Zöe, Ethan, Neal and Tiffany will read the partial dissent/partial concurrence by Justice Breyer.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 (40 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.

Thursday, September 18, 2014 (45 min)

Topic: We will have another computer game today.  Please feel free to bring your own computer, or plan to borrow one from the library.
Homework: Write a reaction to today's game on the class portal. 

Friday, September 19, 2014 (40 min)

Topic: Introduction to Supreme Court Justice bio project. You will write a biographical summary of a Justice from a list provided on the portal. 

Introduction to our first simulation project.

Homework: Begin the reading assignments on the class portal.
