Weekly SyllabusWeek of Monday, December 1 through Friday, December 5
Welcome back!
Congratulations on your successes in the Fall
Trimester. This trimester is an odd one, as we have
14 days of class (weather permitting) before you go
away for 17 days of vacation. Be aware that a big
chunk of your midterm grade will be earned prior to
Christmas break. We will spend most
of the time this trimester on the events and
circumstances leading up to and surrounding the
Civil War, which occurred in the United States from
1861-1865. We will be spending a lot of time
learning about the role of slavery in the Civil War. This week we will
read The Autobiography of Frederick
Douglass. You can probably find a copy in the
school bookstore, or
you can read an online copy. Either way, you
will want to have it with you in class starting on
Tuesday. During this term we will have less
emphasis on tests on more on writing. There
will be at least one short paper about the Civil
War (probably two) and you will also begin working
on your major research paper (which won't be due
until the Spring term). That said, we will
continue with quizzes to make sure that you are
keeping up with the reading. Now that the beginning part of
the year is done, I will be challenging you more
with the reading, writing and research assignments.
Please feel free to conference with me whenever you
feel the need. I will try to give you ample time to
read the material, but you should expect more
homework from me in the Winter. You should plan to
read the syllabus every weekend and plan out your
history studying in advance. Monday, December 1, 2014 (40 minutes)
