Weekly Syllabus

Week of Monday, September 1 through Friday, September 5


This week we will delve into our first module; studying cases related to school segregation. We will learn about some landmark cases, read important decisions, and learn background information to help put the cases into context. I expect that you will find the material somewhat challenging, so please plan to conference.


Monday, September 1, 2014 (45 min)

Topic:  Discussion of the reading and of our first case.

Tuesday, September 2, 2014 (45 min)

Topic: Finish up Eichman as necessary. Introduction to the school desegregation cases.
Homework: Read the handout giving background to the Civil Rights era of the 1950s and 1960s. 


Wednesday, September 3, 2014 (50 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. Video about school desegregation in the 1950s (unless we saw it yesterday).

HomeworkRead the syllabus and opinion in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka I (347 US 483) and the syllabus and opinion in  Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka II (349 US 294).


Thursday, September 4, 2014 (45 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. Discussion of the Southern Manifesto.
Homework: Read the handout Brown at 60 on the class forum.  Page numbers to be specified in class. 


Friday, September 5, 2014 (40 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.
Homework: Read the case Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg. We will discuss it on Monday . Make sure to read the syllabus and the opinion . Please complete a "case brief" form to be turned in on Monday.
